MassChallenge is a global nonprofit startup accelerator founded in 2009 in Boston, pioneering the zero-equity, competition-based accelerator model: it takes no equity, charges no application fee, and awards non-dilutive cash prizes to top performers. Led by CEO Cait Brumme, MassChallenge ranked No. 2 in the US on TIME’s 2026 list of America’s Best Incubators & Accelerators. The organization runs two program types: the classic 4-month Accelerator (three months virtual, one month in-person), run simultaneously in Boston, Texas, Israel, Switzerland, Mexico, and the UK; and a newer “Challenge” model of corporate- and government-sponsored co-innovation programs, with partners including Verizon, Sanofi, Blue Cross Blue Shield, BAE Systems, the U.S. Air Force, Autodesk, Takeda, and Vertex. In 2023, MassChallenge became one of five sites for NATO’s DIANA program. Work is organized around five Challenge Areas — Healthcare & Life Sciences, Climate, Global Financial Systems, Security & Resiliency, and Sustainable Food Systems — alongside the flagship industry-agnostic early-stage Accelerator. A new Breakthrough Bio program launched with Israel and Taiwan as inaugural partner countries. Roughly the top 10% of applicants are selected per cohort. Since 2009, MassChallenge has supported 5,000+ startups; alumni have raised $27B+ in follow-on funding and created 90,000+ jobs, working alongside 500+ global partners and 3,000+ industry expert collaborators. The Switzerland program alone has produced 1,175 alumni who have raised CHF 2.9B+ and created 86,400 jobs.
