Village Capital is a global impact-investing organization and accelerator, founded in 2009 by Ross Baird and Victoria Fram, originally piloted as an initiative of First Light Ventures, an affiliate of impact-investing pioneer Gray Matters Capital, in partnership with the IDEA Village in New Orleans. It pioneered a peer-selected investment model: rather than a panel of judges, entrepreneurs in each cohort evaluate and select which peers receive pre-committed seed capital at the program’s end. Village Capital runs accelerator programs, from one-day forums to multi-month cohorts, across three themes: Climate Innovation & Adaptation, Economic Mobility, and Equitable Access to Essential Services, operating in 40+ countries. Its investment arm, VilCap Investments, has backed 110 peer-selected graduates using equity, debt, or revenue-share instruments, while some corporate-sponsored tracks award non-dilutive grants instead. Village Capital also runs an accelerator-for-accelerators model, VilCap Communities, training local entrepreneur support organizations worldwide, and built Abaca, a free web app now used by 36,000+ founders to assess fundraising readiness. Since 2009, Village Capital has supported 1,800+ startups through 150+ programs, and alumni have collectively raised more than $7.7B in follow-on capital.
